Hi, I'm Krysta

Twenty years in, still pulled by the light.

I've been a photographer for about 20 years, and for a long stretch of that I did it full-time. What I love most hasn't changed: honest, emotive portraits of real people. Families tumbling down the shoreline, expecting parents in the last of the golden hour, couples who forget the camera is there.

These days I have a full-time job in tech, so I don't shoot full-time anymore. But my love for photography still pulls at me.

Mentoring is how I stay in it. It lets me keep doing what I love and share it with photographers here on the coast who already have the eye and are ready to trust it. I'll teach you the fundamentals so they're automatic, and then show you when to break the rules on purpose so the feeling comes through.

"Learn the rules, then break them on purpose, so the real feeling comes through."

Who it's for

Is this you?

  • You already own a decent camera and photograph people on location (beach, marsh, fields, downtown, in-home): families, maternity, couples, weddings, seniors.
  • You charge about $50–75 a session and feel stuck there.
  • Your portraits are "fine" or technically OK, but they feel posed, look like everyone else's beach photos, or don't make people feel something.
  • You want to get paid more, not just make prettier pictures.

Not the right fit (yet): total beginners who don't know their camera, or photographers who want to learn studio lighting. A fundamentals class is a better first step, and the door's open when you're ready.

What you'll learn

The Honest Frame approach

Every frame should be honest: real connection, real laughter and real light, not a performance for the camera.

01

Fundamentals first

Exposure, natural light, composition and lenses until they're automatic, even in bright beach sun and wind.

02

Emotion over perfection

Direct real moments (connection, movement, laughter, stillness, tenderness) instead of stiff, lined-up poses.

03

Creative rule-breaking

Intentional blur, tilted frames, harsh coastal light, shooting through sea oats and marsh grass. Each one a choice that serves the feeling.

04

Premium experience

How you plan the location, guide the session, deliver and price changes what clients will pay.

The 4-week curriculum

Each week: a 2-hour live session (teaching, a demo or shoot, and critique), one assignment, and feedback on your images. In person, we shoot outdoors, mostly at golden hour on the beach and marsh. Virtual mentees join live on Zoom, get the recording, and send their assignment for review each week. No studio needed.

  1. Week 1

    Light & Fundamentals, Made Automatic

Manual exposure without hesitation (even on bright sand and water), focus for moving subjects, lens choice, and reading natural light: golden hour, backlight, open shade, overcast days. A baseline review of where you are now.

AssignmentSubmit 10 "current best" portraits (your before set) and shoot one subject in 3 different kinds of light.

  2. Week 2

    Break the Rules on Purpose

Composition you can bend once you know it. Sun flare, backlight, intentional blur and motion, tilted frames, shooting through sea oats and marsh grass, cropping "wrong." Emotion over perfection, and every break has to serve the feeling.

AssignmentThe "break 3 rules" challenge, each one chosen for a reason.

  3. Week 3

    Directing Real People

Posing without stiffness: prompts, movement and trust. Families (play and chaos), maternity (connection and anticipation), couples (closeness and fun), and kids who won't sit still. In-person mentees join a shoot-along on location.

AssignmentA prompt-only session: real movement, real laughter, 3 distinct emotions.

  4. Week 4

    Portfolio, Pricing & Your Worth

What it takes to charge $300–500+: a portfolio that sells, pricing math and packages, a client experience from inquiry to delivery, and raising rates with confidence.

AssignmentBuild your after portfolio and publish your new pricing. Final group critique.

You finish with

  • A before/after portfolio
  • A written price list
  • A client workflow checklist, including location and weather plans

Good questions

FAQ

Do I need to be experienced?

You should already own a decent camera and photograph people on location, even if it's only on the side. If you're brand new to your camera, start with a fundamentals class first, or book a $99 portfolio review and we'll figure out your next step together.

Where does the mentorship happen?

In person, on location along the coast. I'm based in Holly Ridge, and the program is open to photographers from Jacksonville, Sneads Ferry, Hampstead, Wilmington and nearby towns. Shoots are mostly at golden hour on the beach and marsh (plus maritime forest, downtown Wilmington, or a client's home). Portfolio reviews can be in person or by video. Not local? The virtual option is live on Zoom.

When does the founding cohort start?

Early spring 2027. Exact dates and the weekly session time are shared with everyone who registers. Fill out the form below and I'll reach out with the schedule.

How much does it cost?

The in-person founding cohort is $399 per person. The virtual cohort on Zoom is $249. The Founding Portfolio Review is $99, on its own or as an add-on to either option.

How much time does it take?

About 2 hours a week for the live session, plus optional practice time for your weekly assignment. Four weeks total.

What's the difference between in-person and virtual?

Both get the same 4 weekly 2-hour sessions and the same curriculum. In person, we meet on location on the coast and you join a shoot-along. Virtual is live on Zoom, with recordings of every session and one assignment review each week, but no in-person shoot-along. The $99 portfolio review is available for either, in person or by video.

Can I give this as a gift?

Yes. Gift certificates are available for an in-person seat, a virtual seat, a portfolio review, or a custom amount. Email me to order one and I'll send a personalized, printable certificate.

Do you offer a payment plan?

A payment plan may be available. Email me and we'll talk about what works for you.

What do I give in return for founding pricing?

A short written or video testimonial at the end, and permission to share your before/after images. You always own your own photos.

Will this guarantee I can charge $300+?

No one can honestly guarantee income. What you'll get is the skills, a portfolio and a pricing plan that make $300–500 sessions believable. The rest depends on your effort and your market.

Do I need a studio or lighting gear?

No. This is all natural light, on location. No studio backdrops.

Is it only for family photographers?

We lead with families, maternity and couples, and the same skills carry into weddings and seniors. If you photograph people on location, it's for you.
